Teaching Statement
As an educator, I am primarily interested in responsive, learner-centered teaching that allows the curiosity and inquiry of participants to guide the formation of the educational experience that we share. I favor collaborative, conversational forms of pedagogy and creating opportunities for trans-disciplinary learning to promote a culture of openness, respect, and experimentation in both formal and informal learning environments. My overall goal as an educator is to foster visual literacy, critical thinking, curiosity, self-reflection, and social connection.
I am currently on faculty with the Art Department at Appalachian State University where I teach on modern and contemporary exhibition history, theory and production.
Museum Education Experience
University Audiences Museum Educator, Ackland Art Museum, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC
At the Ackland Art Museum, I provided docent training for museum exhibitions, created interpretive materials and programs, and lead gallery talks and education programs in the galleries for university and public audiences.
Program Curator, Elsewhere, Greensboro, NC
For Elswhere I designed and lead custom education programs tailored for a broad range of institutions, communities, ages and interests. The programs, focus on the material culture and history Elsewhere’s building and its collection of 20th century thrift and surplus, contemporary art production, strategies for building community, home economics, and urban design. They are always participatory, interdisciplinary, and hands-on, emphasizing curiosity driven experiential learning, critical thinking, close observation, and participant collaboration.
