Gate City Acres

Artist made mini-golf course

produced for the Center for Visual Arts, Greensboro, NC

July-August 2019

Gate City Acres was a nine hole artist made mini-golf course produced as an immersive installation in the galleries at the Center for Visual Arts in Greensboro, NC. It was specifically designed to support the Center’s mission to cultivate a broad base multi-generational audience for the arts in central North Carolina and provide a platform for local artists working across many media.

Artist teams created a set of playable sculptures with families and children looking for indoor summer fun in mind, during a time when attendance at gallery exhibitions and events tends to wane. For the artists, this was an opportunity to hone skills in interactive design, develop construction methods that might be applied to other projects, open up new creative possibilities in their practices, and connect with other local creatives through collaborative processes and project events.

The project was also designed as a friend and fundraiser for the Center, and as an opportunity for the organization to test new models of program sponsorship. Funding for the project  (supporting honoraria and materials for the artists and curators) and additional revenue for the center came through ticket sales and merchandising.

The overall mood of the project was playful, light, and fun, creating a space that was much more like an arcade, commercial mini-golf course, or homemade haunted house than a traditional gallery going experience.
